Approximately $45,000 was raised by hospitals and offices around Australia and, with Ramsay Health Care’s promise to match the funding, this brought the total donation to a very commendable $90,000. The Red Cross was selected as the preferred charity to receive the donation given the organisation’s extensive experience in disaster and emergency response. The Red Cross have staff on the ground in Nepal assisting with the disaster and supported by resources warehoused in Kuala Lumpur. They were able to respond very quickly including the delivery of relief items to 15,000 families within 14 days after the disaster. In raising the money, hospitals organised trivia nights, walks, raffles and morning teas juswt to name a few of the activities. Top fundraising hospitals included Hollywood, Noosa, Baringa and Greenslopes Private Hospitals. But even small facilities, such as the Ramsay Victorian office, raised significant sums for their size and towards the cause. On hearing of Ramsay Health Care’s decision to match all funds raised, Hollywood Respiratory Specialist, Dr Michael Tandon gave a generous donation of $10,000. Dr Tandon, who is originally from India, worked with Veterans’ Affairs at Hollywood Repatriation Hospital from 1969.
